The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games has opened in Glasgow, Scotland, running from 23 July to 2 August, with Team Australia fielding 256 athletes across all 10 sports in a pared-back program.

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games run from 23 July to 2 August 2026 with the opening ceremony broadcast on Channel 7 and 7Plus in Australia from 5am AEST on 24 July.
Australia is sending 256 athletes, including 151 debutants, with every state and territory represented across the pared-back program with the para events occuring at the same time and contributing to the overall medal tally.
Why is Glasgow hosting a smaller Games?
Victoria pulled out of its hosting contract in 2023 after the budget blew out from AUD$2.6 billion to nearly $7 billion, and paid $380 million in compensation to Commonwealth Games organisers.
Part of that money helped fund Glasgow’s rescue package as the Scottish city delivers the event without public funding. The result is the trimmed 10-sport format and the hotel-based accommodation model.
Glasgow last hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and will use its existing infrastructure to deliver the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Which Aussies are competing
The 2026 team includes the Australian Diamonds chasing back-to-back netball gold and world record-holding swimmer Cameron McEvoy, aiming to add to his eight Commonwealth Games medals.
The cycling squad features six reigning world champions, including two-time gold medallist para-cyclist Jessica Gallagher. The 86-strong track and field team is led by Olympic champion and flag-bearer Nina Kennedy, alongside 1500m national record holder Cameron Myers.
Para-athletes will compete on the same stage as able-bodied counterparts across six sports with results contributing to the medal tally.
Governor-General Sam Mostyn will represent Australia at the Games as Patron-in-Chief of Commonwealth Games Australia alongside flag bearers para-swimmer and Birmingham 2022 gold medallist Tim Hodge OAM and pole-vaulter Nina Kennedy OAM.
