Arnold Schwarzenegger will be visiting Melbourne for its first Arnold Classic, his namesake. The first Arnold Classic was held in Columbus, Ohio in 1989, since then, Brazil and Spain has held their own annual Arnold Classic.

So what is the Arnold Classic going to look like in Australia? It’s anyone’s guess really. We’ve been told it’s a “sports festival with 26 sports including Pro bodybuilding, bikini and figure competitions, Australia’s strongest man, kung fu, martial arts and everything in between from bikram yoga to arm wrestling”. It’s safe to say that it’s going to be about bodybuilding and fitness.

Check out a clip from one of the Arnold Classic’s last year:

At least Arnold Schwarzenegger sounds keen:

“I am really excited about the Arnold Classic Australia.  I look forward to seeing everyone compete. It’ll be a great event. I’ll be there ….. every day!”

Tony Doherty, the Australian organizer of the event says:  “I’m so proud to be able to make this event happen. We’ve sold out all the exhibition space, 10 bays of the MCEC ! We have over 8,000 athletes competing and with tickets to attend starting from just $25 a day it’ll be the biggest sporting event in Melbourne since the 1956 Olympics!”

Tickets for the Arnold Classic Australia is on the 13th – 15th of March and tickets start at $25 and are available from www.arnoldclassic.com.au

Expect to see a lot of muscle bound visitors to Melbourne – the city may also experience a shortage of protein powder during the event.

Should we hold more events like this to draw tourism?
