Losing your money (or having it stolen) while on holidays can be scary, so travellers are forced to come up with new and creative (and smelly) ways of keeping it safe.
And the most popular technique used to stash away cash?
Tucking it into your sock.
According to a new MasterCard Travelling with Cash survey, 1.28 million people say they’ve carried money in their socks while travelling abroad.
The study also revealed that Australian travellers carry around $866 million in cash when travelling overseas and it wouldn’t surprise you to find that 78 percent of those say they’re worried it could be lost or stolen.
MasterCard Australia SVP& Country Manager, Andrew Cartwright jumped on study results, saying that holidaymakers can travel with ease by using cards to reduce the risk of theft or loss.
According to the company, MasterCard has seen a growth of 70 percent in the use of cards since 2013.
He said Australians are turning to the prepaid travel card because they see it as a convenient payment method that is also safer than carrying large amounts of cash.
Meanwhile, MasterCard has also provided its top tips for your clients to manage payment abroad.
Tips include using travel cards, be spending savvy, avoid making large cash withdrawals from local ATMs, keep card issuer details handy and keep PIN safe.
