Tigerair reduces carry-on allowance

Travellers flying with Tigerair will get a little less 'bag' for their buck, as the no-frills airline reduces carry-on baggage allowance.

Travellers flying with Tigerair will get a little less ‘bag’ for their buck, as the no-frills airline reduces carry-on baggage allowance.

Currently, travellers can carry-on a maximum of 10 kilograms. This will change from 17 April to seven kilograms per person.

The new Tigerair carry-on baggage guidelines will allow customers to carry a maximum of two bags free of charge provided they do not exceed 54cm X 38cm X 23cm or a total combined weight of seven kilograms per person.

Travellers looking for a little extra space will be able to pre-purchase it.

An extra five kilograms will cost up to $18 for shorter flights or $23 for long haul.

Those who fail to pre-purchase the extra space will be able to pay for it at check-in, however, they’re looking at a fee of $36 for short flights and $46 for longer flights.

Failing this, the baggage will have to be carried in the hold of the aircraft and forms part of the total checked baggage allowance that is charged accordingly and also varies depending on the length of the sector.

Tiger said changes bring the airline’s policy up-to-speed with industry standards.

Virgin, Qantas and Jetstar already have a seven kilogram free baggage allowance limit in place.

Additionally, Tiger believes it will help manage overcrowding in the overhead lockers and ‘enable efficiencies during check-in to enhance on-time performance’.

“We know our passengers love low fares delivered on time. To further assist us with these goals, Tigerair will implement these new guidelines from 17 April and all we ask that passengers consider carefully how much baggage they wish to take on board with them.”

Tigerair also recently invested in website enhancements that allow passengers to add bags or buy excess baggage weight after booking their flight (up to four hours before travelling) to take advantage of the lowest bag charge.

Think the change is fair or did Tigerair just lose its edge?
