Help name a cruise ship

Naming a cruise ship isn't as easy as you'd think, that's why Hurtigruten is asking agents and travellers to lend a hand in naming its forthcoming vessel.

Naming a cruise ship isn’t as easy as you’d think, that’s why Hurtigruten is asking agents and travellers to lend a hand in naming its forthcoming vessel.

Late last month, the Norway-based cruise line announced it was adding a new baby to its fleet in 2016 – its first new vessel in over a decade.

In the midst of all the excitement, Hurtigruten decided to postpone naming the ship, instead giving it the interm title MS Norway Explorer.

Now with a little over a year until the ship officially arrives, Hurtigruten is asking agents and cruise fans to help name its newest child.

In addition to adding ‘ship namer’ to the resume, the person with the winning title and a friend will be invited to sail on the ship as a special guest of the Captain.

Before you jump in with all your ideas, you might want to get to know the ship a little better.

Here’s everything we know about Hurtigruten’s vessel so far:

When she launches during the 2016/17 season, she will operate on Hurtigruten’s coastal route, however, she will be equipped to sail in polar waters should she ever be called on to do so.

She will carry a total of 320 guests in 180 cabins.

And while she may be new to Hurtigruten, she was originally built in 2009 by the Portuguese shipyard Estaleiro Navais de Viana do Castelo.

When submitting your suggestions remember that Hurtigruten wants the name to start with ‘MS’ (motor vessel) and it has to be a Norwegian word or words with a Norwegian origin – for example fjord.

Other ships in the  fleet are named after natural phenomena, places along the Hurtigruten route or key figures in Norwegian history.

Name suggestions should be submitted on to the Hurtigruten Facebook page between 21 July and 10 August 2015.

The winner will enjoy a voyage on the new ship next year, as she travels along the Norwegian coast.
