A passport is the most important thing you need when traveling abroad. But since it’s not something that everyone is used to keeping track of everyday, it can be hard to remember to keep it safe.

If you look up tips on how to protect your passport, most experts recommend fairly obvious ideas such as making copies and using a passport holder.

1. Travel light – This will minimize the unwanted attention generated by carrying an entire wardrobe with you and you can move more freely in case a thief tries to pickpocket you.

2. Pack it in plastic – Use a plastic bag to wrap up your passport and any other important documents. You never know if your cosmetics or drinks might spill in your carryon bag.

3. A (slightly) sneaky passport cover – Some passports are considered more valuable than others. So if you’ve got a prime target in your bag, try a cover that creatively suggests you’re from somewhere else!

4. Mind your health – If you’re not feeling well, you are more likely to be forgetful! Bring multivitamins and rest up on the flight so you maintain your A game.

5. A stealthy scarf – Instead of a practical but less than stylish money belt, sport a travel scarf with a hidden pocket for your valuables.

6. Carry alternate IDs – You may need an ID to reserve rentals or spots at tourist sites, so bring a driver’s license or another card to use instead of your passport.

7. Create a mini passport – If you’ll need to show your passport or remember your number, laminate a smaller copy of your front page so that it can fit in your wallet.

8. Separate your stuff – Keep your passport, money and other important items in separate areas, so if you lose one, you don’t lose it all.

9. Forget the language – If someone insists on seeing your passport, and you’re not quite sure about it, turn on your acting skills and act like you have no idea what’s going on.

10. Keep it online – In addition to keeping a photocopy of your passport on you, keep a scanned version of your passport online that you can access from your phone if needed.

11. Declutter your carryon – If your bag has a tendency to be a ‘black hole’, you’ll know why this is important. Removing clutter makes it easier to spot your passport and you’ll notice if it goes missing more quickly.

If all else fails, and you do end up with a stolen, lost or badly damaged passport, just be sure you have the contact details for your nearest consulate or embassy.
