How Western Australia wows

Kalbarri Carolyn Tipper Travel Director
Carolyn Tipper has a passion for sharing all that makes this region so special.

Carolyn Tipper, an experienced Travel Director with AAT Kings for over 20 years, reveals why Western Australia has her heart.

“I love guiding guests through WA because the natural diversity is immense! The Indigenous and local people are my true loves, along with the state’s history from the beginning of time to today.”

When asked about her favourite Western Australia location, she said, “Impossible, I enjoy it all!”

“Every region has its charm, be it the west’s harsh desert country, the rugged mountains, ancient geology, amazing wildflowers, coastal animals, and diverse culture. There are so many stories to tell!”

When asked what visitors want beyond the sightseeing, Tipper shared, “They want a worry-free, all-encompassing holiday. They yearn to see, hear and meet the people who have and ARE the real stories of this great place. They gain empathy for our precious cultures while standing in awe of WA’s massive horizons.”

It’s clear Carolyn Tipper considers herself lucky to guide through Western Australia, so what are the state’s highlights?

Mimbi Caves

An Indigenous guide showcases the ancient rock paintings and majestic Dreamtime stories of the spectacular Mimbi Caves.

Tipper reveals, “Dating over 350 million years, the Mimbi Caves are part of the Devonian limestone Reef and home of the Gooniyandi people. In WWII, the crystal-clear icy rock pools were used for fresh water, keeping cool, and protection from pastoralists.”

Your clients can discover Mimbi Caves on day four of the 11-day Wonders of the Kimberley. From $8,240pp twin share – plus, get up to $900 air credit.

Kalbarri National Park

The Murchison River left echo-inspiring gorges in its path as it carved its way through Kalbarri National Park. A hundred metres above the river, Kalbarri Skywalk best reveals soaring cliffs and red-and-white banded sandstone of this impressive natural wonder.

“Known as Kaju Yatka in Nanda language, this was once the waterway into desert country for those chasing gold and minerals,” Tipper shares. “Kalbarri National Park is also home to a staggering 12,000 wildflower species, with 60% found nowhere else on Earth!”

Guests also enjoy a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience, learning about bushfoods, medicine plants, and history from an Aboriginal perspective.

Find this on day four of the 13-day Untamed Pilbara and West Coast. From $9,445 with a $900 air credit.

Hamelin Bay Wines

The premium wines of the Margaret River Region are a major draw. While there are many high-quality vineyards, Hamelin Bay Wines stands out for its picturesque oceanside location and delicious vintages.

“Off the beaten track, this is one of WA’s most relaxed family-run venues,” Tipper reveals. “It features amazing red and white signature wines, accompanied by upmarket pub food and spectacular views.”

Guests visit on day seven of the expansive 15-day Western Wonderland itinerary. From $7,313 with $900 air credit.

Hoochery Distillery

En route between the Kimberley’s Kununurra and Emma Gorge, the Hoochery Distillery showcases the inner workings of a family-run rum distillery. Guests meet the makers and discover the process to make award-winning rums and whiskeys.

Tipper loves the family’s determination to become Western Australia’s first legal rum distillery. “Guests enjoy learning how everything was hand-built and sourced locally.”

The distillery features on day five of AAT Kings’ 11-day Untamed Kimberley tour. From $8,240 per person with $900 air credit.

Geraldton’s wildflowers

The Midwest’s breathtaking landscape wows annually when over 12,000 wildflower species bloom. As well as seeing this stunning spectacle, guests explore native flora paintings at Helen Ansell Art Gallery and revel in expert narration about wildflower species at Coleseam Conservation Park.

Tipper acknowledges, “The perfect combination of soil, sunshine and rain creates spectacular wildflower displays across this vast region with the best viewing between August and October.”

Geraldton’s blooms bring delight on day five of the 7-day Wildflower Wonderer. From $3,465 with a $500 air credit.

El Questro

The towering ochre gorges of the Cockburn Ranges, picturesque watering holes, and the soothing sounds of nature are a highlight.

Tipper shares what makes it special, “Spanning 700,000 acres in the heart of the beautiful Kimberley region, the landscape is dotted with cascading waterfalls and thermal springs.”

El Questro is on days 15 and 16 of the Wonders of the West Coast and Kimberley tour. From $15,422 with a $900 air credit.
