Amsterdam is a staple destination for any great bucket list.

This incredible city, which has been lovingly nicknamed ‘The Venice of the North’ as an ode to its many canals, is fit to burst with fun activities, sights, and history. With so much to do and see, it can be hard to know where to begin.

So, pop on your clogs and unchain your bicycles, as we’ve comprised a list of the best ways you might want to celebrate whilst visiting this Dutch treasure…

Sound tempting? We bet it does!

If Amsterdam sounds like your dream destination, Etihad Airways are getting you there in style with flights to Amsterdam daily.

There’s never been a better time to book a seat on an Etihad aircraft with the company evolving to offer customers more choice than ever on the way they move between the spots they’re set on seeing.

Etihad is all about giving you choices. No matter how you choose to travel, Etihad understands that every journey and every traveller is different.

Whichever cabin category passengers travel in, Etihad Airways offers options that suit their individual preferences because, after 15 years in the business, it understands the desire to personalise each travel experience.

Right, lets cut to the cheese (chase, sorry).

Amsterdam might not be famed for its cuisine (not forgetting, of course, the cheese) but it EXCELS at celebrating the food of others. And, in return, we feel it’s only fitting to show the same sense of gratitude by eating as much food as we can in the city’s wonderful FoodHallen, located in the oh-so-trendy Oud West neighbourhood.

This wickedly cool indoor food market makes sampling your body-weight in food and wine not only an expected goal but a TRENDY ACTIVITY- as if we needed any more reason to believe that this is the best place ever. It’s also the self-proclaimed first of its kind food hall in the Netherlands.

Make the most of the fun atmosphere and go at nighttime, where drinks are poured in excess and live music is played late into night.

Amsterdam is famed for it’s wonderfully intricate but close network of shops, museums, bars and restaurants. There’s so much to do in the city centre that it’s easy to forget that there’s even more left to explore in the outer districts.

Namely, just a short boat ride away, across the main IJ bay. From Amsterdam Central Station a pleasant 15 minute ferry journey can take you to the region named ‘Amsterdam Noord’, a trendy spot littered with a number of edgy riverside bars and restaurants.

Our favourite? Try Pllek Bar, the wonderfully cool ‘beach’ bar with delicious cocktails, beers and bites. This hidden gem has a man-made beach, thrifty seating and a bar built from old shipping containers, making it the perfect place to kick back, enjoy the skyline view and unwind from ‘city life’ for an afternoon.

We can’t comprise a list about ways to enjoy Amsterdam without mentioning it’s illustrious and trendy nightlife scene. The city is transformed by night; the canals become illuminated by the fluorescent lights of the windows and bars, the tourist maps are stowed away and the fun really begins.

It’s a totally unique experience to stroll through the historic, globally famous pavements of the red light district, and with an abundance of bars you can easily skip (stumble) from bar stool to bar stool and have an unforgettable time.

If you’re feeling particularly fancy, why not pay a visit to the rooftop Sky Lounge bar, which offers breathtaking views of your new favourite city from the comfortable and cool terrace seats.

Or, if you’d prefer a more lowkey evening and a chance to meet some friendly locals, visit one of the oldest bars in Amsterdam, Proeflokaal De Dries Fleschjes. It’s been around since The Golden Age, meaning you can enjoy some history with your Heineken.
