1. Starkbierfest

Oktoberfest is known all over the world as the largest fun fair in the world (plus they have beer), but what if you don’t want to wait until then? Starkbierfest or ‘Strong Beer Festival’ is exactly what it sounds like, a beer drinking delight that runs in March!

To appreciate the Munich love of beer you have to consider what locals call the ‘fifth season’ when beer halls and breweries host their own Starkbierfests across the city.

The original and biggest party is at Paulaner “Nockherberg” brewery just slightly south of central Munich. It’s an excellent Oktoberfest-esque atmosphere where thousands of visitors (get out your lederhosen!) sit shoulder to shoulder in a vast hall and dance on their seats to modern and old-timey German hits alike.

2. Christmas Markets

Your first stop should be the traditional market area in Marienplatz (the main square in Old Town), this is the granddaddy of all Christmas markets!

There’s a huge tree absolutely bedazzled with lights and decorations, and live music every night at the town hall from the early afternoon onwards.

Once you’ve seen all there is in the main square, head down to Wintertollwood where the locals socialise and eat street food from all over the world. Or maybe you’d prefer Mittelaltermarkt (The Medieval Market) where jugglers and street artists take you back to the city’s olden days!

But there are so many more to explore, with fairytales, international gifts, nativity scenes, the list goes on! There’s even one with two icy curling rinks!

3. Fasching Carnival

Can’t make it to Rio? Munich’s carnival season begins officially on November 11 and lasts three whole months!

Everything kicks off with the coronation of a carnival prince and a carnival princess and lasts until Ash Wednesday which seven weeks before Easter. Most of the big events are held in the last few days which is when you want to rock up!

During these three months more than 800 balls will be held in Munich (so surely you’ll be able to wrangle yourself and invitation to at least one!).

The biggest events can host thousands of people at a time! Most of these are fancy dress balls, but there are also classical gala balls in dinner jacket and evening dress, so make sure to pack accordingly!
