itravel Penshurst owner Melissa Devlin has racked up more than four decades in travel – and 10 years with the agency network – an impressive achievement that has seen her navigate the dynamic shifts in the industry landscape since starting her career.
Sydney-based Devlin has charted an interesting course over her travel industry career, from advisor to business owner, accumulating several accolades, including NTIA Best Travel Agency Manager (Retail Multi Location) finalist in 2015.
The one-time accountant joined the travel industry in the 1980s, working with several agencies before launching her business in 2000, which she said was the highlight of her career.
Keeping up with the travel industry
Devlin has seen the travel industry transform dramatically, from using airline and hotel directories that weighed a tonne, to today’s digital platforms.
“We used to phone airlines and hotels directly to book; technology changed everything,” she said.
When online booking emerged, she responded by “combating that with exceptional service and showing clients the value of our expertise, particularly through the challenges of COVID-19”.
Her resilience has been tested by major global events, from the Gulf Wars to the pandemic, but Devlin said the key to her longevity and success is her ability to evolve.
“Each challenge was overcome with perseverance, hard work, a keen eye on budgets and increasing marketing to drive demand in times of low turnover,” she said.
