Julie King steps down from CATO Board after decade of leadership

After a decade of service, Julie King will step down from the Council of Australian Tour Operators (CATO) Board on Thursday, 12 June, marking the end of a significant chapter in the organisation’s leadership journey.

After a decade of service, Julie King will step down from the Council of Australian Tour Operators (CATO) Board on Thursday, 12 June, marking the end of a significant chapter in the organisation’s leadership journey.

Appointed by Chair Dennis Bunnik in 2014, Ms King has played a key role in the growth and transformation of CATO, particularly during the travel industry’s most turbulent period throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a statement, Ms King said the decision not to seek re-election at the upcoming AGM followed a period of deep reflection.

“After ten incredibly rewarding years on the CATO Board, I have made the considered decision not to seek re-election at the upcoming AGM. This is not a decision I’ve taken lightly. It comes after much reflection, and with deep respect for the Association, its members, and the important work that lies ahead,” she said.

“In recent months, I’ve taken the time to consider where I can best focus my energy and how I can continue to contribute meaningfully to the industry. With that clarity, I feel this is the right time to step aside and allow others the opportunity to bring fresh perspectives to the Board.”

“While I’m stepping away from a formal governance role, I remain deeply committed to supporting CATO strategically in any way I can.”

Ms King’s decade-long tenure has been marked by strategic communications leadership and instrumental advocacy during the pandemic. Her presence, influence, and perspective were widely recognised by her colleagues, including CATO Chair Dennis Bunnik.

“I’d like to congratulate Julie on her 10 years of service to CATO and to sincerely thank her for her dedication and hard work,” Bunnik said.

“Julie was one of the first people I asked to join the board when I became Chair 10 years ago. Since then, she’s been an integral part of the growth and transformation of CATO. Julie’s leadership and communications skills have played a vital role in CATO’s success. This was especially so during CATO’s successful lobbying efforts during the Covid years.”

“On behalf of the board and our members I wish her all the best and look forward to a continued partnership.”

CATO Managing Director Brett Jardine echoed the sentiment, reflecting on the personal and professional influence Julie has had during her time on the Board.

“Julie’s calm and considered approach has had a profound impact on me personally and on CATO more broadly,” Jardine said.

“There have been many occasions where I’d catch myself thinking, ‘What would Julie think?’—a true testament to the positive influence she’s had. I’m deeply grateful for the role she’s played on the CATO Board, and I have no doubt her legacy will continue to shape the organisation well into the future.”
