A passion for her job and the travel industry… that’s what MTA – Mobile Travel Agents’ Donna Jones says propelled her to victory in the category of Most Outstanding Mobile/Home-Based Travel Advisor at last weekend’s National Travel Industry Awards (NTIAs). But in a category that has become increasingly competitive, a little knowledge about destinations and products didn’t harm her chances either – nor did some risk-taking.
Congratulations on the win! What does this award mean to you personally and professionally?
This award sets me apart with the recognition of all that I have done over the past year and beyond.
It concretes my passion for the industry and my passion for striving for the best for my clients.
To what do you attribute your success as a travel advisor?

I think that my success has been largely based on my passion for the industry. In every post on social media, every email, every interaction that I have with my clients, my passion shines through.
My extensive knowledge is also a big factor. My clients and potential clients regularly comment that I know so much about the destinations, products… I make it my business to go [to destinations] so that I know and learn as much as I can and keep that learning up to date with ongoing training.
Do you have any advice for anyone looking to become a Mobile / Home Based Travel Advisor?
Absolutely! If you have the qualifications and industry experience to go out on your own and feel that you are ready to embark on your own business, be your own boss and set your own pace, don’t let a lack of confidence or concern for what might be stop you.

I had 15 years of experience working in agencies before I started on my own after several years away from the industry. I started my own business with no database or customer base at all and built my business up using strategies, networking and connections.
I could never have imagined back then the success it has now become. You will never know unless you give it a go!
What are you most excited about that’s coming up for travel/your sector?
I am so excited about the school traineeship and gap year programs that ATIA are looking to implement. This is the future of our industry and will help to ensure that we continually evolve and have fresh eyes and ideas along with the experience and mentorship from those of us who have been part of the industry for a long time to keep things moving forward in the best possible way.
What does the future look like for you and your business?

The future looks very bright. I have plans in place to continually evolve my business and keep things exciting and interesting for my clients.
What do you love most about your job and the travel industry?
I love that I get to be a part of helping people live their best lives in the best way possible.
Travel is what dreams are made of, and I am so lucky that I am able to help to make those dreams come true!
