Passport and Prejudice: a busy travel agent’s guide to dating

It is a truth universally acknowledged that most travel agents are busy. Their days are filled with tireless negotiations, intricate planning, and fervent prayers to the travel gods for increased capacity. Alas, while tending to others' escapades, they have scarce a moment even to scratch their own posteriors, and their amorous desires oft go neglected. In other words, dear readers, they are single and ready to mingle.

We know it’s hard. You work in a female-dominated industry. You’re busy. And at the end of a long day, you can really only muster enough energy to open the door to collect your Uber Eats delivery. But as experts in crafting unforgettable journeys, it’s time for you to apply those remarkable skills to the world of dating.

Where to go

Attend industry conferences, seminars, and events to widen your dating horizons. Travel when you can. Who knows, you might find love at the baggage claim or while sharing a cramped seat on a long-haul flight. And then, when you find them, remember that choosing the right dating destination is crucial. Think of it as sending your client to their perfect vacay spot. You wouldn’t send the lovely, quiet-loving retired couple to Ibiza in the middle of summer, right? Have you connected over a love of the outdoors? Going to the movies won’t work nearly as well as a bushwalk. Craving adventure? Try an escape room.

Check-in oversized baggage

We all have some baggage. Maybe not right away, but when you’re comfortable, be sure to declare any items of note. And heed the weight restrictions. Nobody wants to lug your baggage around on holiday.

Translate and communicate

Learning to read signs doesn’t come naturally to everyone. Is that flirtatious smile an invitation to explore or a mere friendly gesture? Watch for body language, listen to your instincts, and if in doubt, ask for clarification. No one likes missed connections! Remember your active listening skills, use honest expressions, and express your needs and boundaries. Clear communication is the GPS to a healthy and thriving relationship.

Go online

Online dating can be a bit like an online travel agency. Before you swipe right, remember to stay sceptical, use your detective skills, and always arrange that first date in a public place. Safety first, always!

Go solo

Sometimes, the best trips are the ones taken alone. Embrace being single and enjoy your own company. Do what you want to do while you’re not beholden to anyone else. And it makes for some fantastic stories to share with that future travel companion.

Pack the essentials

  • Confidence and resilience are your secret weapons for a successful dating journey. Own your unique qualities and, if you have to, embrace rejection as redirection towards someone better suited for you.
  • Whatever bag you bring on a date, make sure you’ve filled it with a good sense of humour. And we’re not just talking witty comebacks and funny anecdotes to break the ice. We’re talking about being able to laugh when your date’s a dud who thinks Wakanda is a country in Africa.
  • Don’t forget your patience. Remember that finding the right match takes time (and a few wrong turns along the way).
  • Throw out those judgmental goggles, and be sure to pack a pair of open-minded sunnies. Be willing to explore different personalities, interests, and perspectives. There are a lot of fish in the sea, but if you keep fishing in the same spot for the same type of fish, you’ll get the same result each time.
  • Don’t forget to pack your self-care essentials. Prioritise your well-being throughout the dating process. Treat yourself to relaxing bubble baths, rejuvenating hobbies, and moments of self-reflection.
  • And trust your intuition (as easily creased as it may be). Your intuition is your navigational guide. Trust your gut instincts when it comes to assessing potential partners and situations. If something doesn’t feel right, don’t hesitate to reroute.
