SERIOUS SUSTAINABILITY: Peruvian operator goes completely carbon neutral

Plenty of tourism operators talk the eco tourism talk, but how many make these ideas a reality? There's no denying that Lower Amazon company, Rainforest Expeditions, is practicing what they preach thanks to their decision to completely eliminate their carbon footprint.

Plenty of tourism operators talk the eco tourism talk, but how many make these ideas a reality? There’s no denying that Lower Amazon company, Rainforest Expeditions, is practicing what they preach thanks to their decision to completely eliminate their carbon footprint.

It’s a natural progression for the company which has long been committed to promoting and protecting rainforest biodiversity in its Tambopata, Peru home.

“During this critical moment for climate change, we decided that we needed to get even more serious about sustainability. Protecting our own surroundings wasn’t enough anymore. We wanted to contribute on a global level by eliminating our carbon footprint.”

To achieve this goal they teamed up with Regenera (an organisation that helps manage the carbon footprint in Peru) to successfully offset emissions for their three eco-lodges, Posada Amazonas, Refugio Amazonas and Tambopata Research Center.

They also offset all their emissions from their offices and services in Puerto Maldonado.

This is a first for the entire region.

Unique Latin America, who represents Rainforest Expeditions in Australia couldn’t be prouder of the company’s decision.

It is their second client from a portfolio of five to become the first carbon neutral operator in their destination.

It comes after Unique Latin America’s other client, Ecoventura became the first cruise operator to offset emissions in the Galapagos Islands in 2006.

“It’s been a pleasure to represent such forward-thinking companies who are constantly evolving and striving to use tourism as a force for good,” Director of Unique Latin America Rebeca Espinoza, said.

“Just when I thought Rainforest Expeditions couldn’t do anymore, we receive this fantastic news,” she said.

Rainforest Expeditions said carbon neutrality was so deeply important to them because “it’s a small way that all of us, from companies to individual adventurers, can preserve the world that we so love to explore.”

Spot on!
