Why Fiji continues to shine for multi-gen travel, according to a Fiji expert

Multi-generation travel is having a moment, with families choosing shared experiences overseas over celebrations at home. But not every destination works for every age group. Here, Gerringong–based TravelManagers Personal Travel Manager Julie Napier — who has visited Fiji more than 50 times — shares why the Pacific island favourite continues to deliver for milestone celebrations and multi-gen holidays alike.

Whether your clients are looking to celebrate a special birthday, wedding anniversary, vow renewal, or simply want to get the clan together, Fiji offers the complete package when it comes to multi-generational holidays.

Close to Australia, familiar, affordable, and safe, with a wide range of accommodation options, Fiji is perfectly set up for families – from babies through to great-grandparents – to ensure everyone is happy (no small feat).

How Fiji is multi-gen friendly

There are ample ways for the whole family to be entertained in Fiji

The best multi-generational destinations make it simple for every attendee to do things both together and apart. Whether it’s budget-friendly or the ultimate splurge, Fiji excels with this, thanks to a wide range of family-friendly resorts, properties with interconnecting rooms, and multi-room villa stays for larger groups.

Add in amenities like kids’ clubs, babysitting services, adults-only dining and pools, and ample onsite dining options, and it’s easy to see why this island paradise has been growing in popularity for extended family gatherings.

Julie Napier finds Shangri-La Yanuca Island well situated for multi-generational travel

With a focus on families, multi-generational travel, and milestone celebrations, Gerringong–based TravelManagers Personal Travel Manager, Julie Napier, recently travelled to Fiji with four generations.

“When planning my parents’ joint 80th birthday celebration, Fiji was an obvious choice. The short flight from Australia, the quality of resorts, the strong value for money, improved food offerings, and excellent kids’ facilities make it an ideal destination to bring families together.”

“The key was choosing a resort I knew could genuinely support a large, multi-generational group. I chose the Shangri-La Yanuca Island, Fiji Resort on the Coral Coast for its convenience for all family members, along with its adults-only pools and dining, quieter spaces for downtime, and excellent kids’ clubs and babysitting services.”

Fiji’s culture also enhances milestone celebrations. There’s a warmth to the nation’s famous hospitality that makes celebrations feel personal rather than packaged, amplifying the experience for all.

For travel advisors, Fiji’s real strength is in the different multi-gen trip styles it offers.

Denarau is the plug-and-play option, close to Nadi airport. Abundant with resorts, dining, day tours, and marina access, it suits groups who want maximum convenience, minimal transfers, and easy add-ons, like island day cruises, cultural shows, shopping, and golf.

The Coral Coast is another multi-gen favourite, particularly for families who want more space without losing accessibility. Think expansive beachfront resorts, relaxed pacing, and room to spread out. It’s a sweet spot for milestone groups because you can easily build in special dinners and experiences.

For Julie Napier, the Coral Coast is ideal because her group’s trip lengths varied. She shares, “We needed to stay on the main island for the family members short on time.

“Other island recommendations include Kokomo Private Island for that elevated luxury experience, and Vomo Island is a beautiful choice for families.”

The Mamanuca islands are known for their family friendly accommodation, with resorts like Castaway, Malolo Island Resort, and Six Senses popular options for Australians.

For groups seeking more seclusion, Fiji’s outer islands and villa accommodation fit the bill. As Napier notes: “Certain outer island resorts – like Jean-Michel Cousteau in Savusavu and Kokomo in Kadavu – can work beautifully for milestone trips when privacy and exclusivity are priorities. The key is matching the resort to the group’s dynamics, not just the budget.”

Four generations, one milestone celebration

That Julie Napier turned to Fiji for her parents’ 80th birthday celebration will come as no surprise when you learn she’s been there more than fifty times. “Fiji is a key destination because I know it intimately and I trust it implicitly for families. That confidence allows me to match the right resort, room configuration, and experiences to each group, knowing the destination will support the holiday rather than complicate it.”

She continues, “Fiji was my very first overseas trip. I was 16 and travelled with my parents and four other families to the Shangri-La Yanuca Island, Fiji, on the Coral Coast. It sparked a lifelong love of Fiji.”

That experience came full circle as she began planning the big birthday bash, inviting four generations to celebrate. “I built a flexible itinerary to allow people to come together naturally – through shared dinners and celebrations – while allowing everyone the freedom to enjoy Fiji in their own way.”

The wow moments were exactly the kind that matter for milestone groups, shares Napier, “From beautifully organised celebratory dinners to the incredibly personal recognition of my parents as long-standing Bilo Club members, the experience felt heartfelt rather than formulaic.”

There’s been a demand for more meaningful trips that bring families together, says Napier. “I’ve seen a noticeable increase in multi-generational travel centred around connection and celebration. Families are travelling to mark milestone events rather than hosting large parties at home.”

Napier starts every new enquiry with a few questions that shape everything: “I always ask who is travelling and their ages, what they’re celebrating (if anything), and how they envision spending time together versus apart.

“Most of my Fiji bookings are groups of 10 to 25, with ages ranging from toddlers through to grandparents in their 70s or 80s.

“Flexibility is essential for these families. I help them choose a resort that offers options, with an itinerary that allows people to opt in or out without pressure. Room configuration and location within a resort also make a huge difference.”

Make milestone trips stand out with elevated activities

To elevate milestones, think beyond one big dinner, says Napier. “Private beach events, cultural ceremonies, island days, and spa experiences all add depth. Equally important are practical add-ons like babysitting services and kids’ club flexibility, so adults can truly relax and celebrate.”

The trip planning wouldn’t be possible without support from Tourism Fiji, Napier shares, “They’re an outstanding partner, offering webinars, famils, and informative communication.

“Combined with strong on-the-ground partners, I can confidently offer clients up-to-date insights, reliable recommendations, and seamless experiences – all invaluable when planning complex trips where the details really matter.”
