TRIBUTE: Farewell to travel industry legend Chris Petty

The words “industry legend” are often bandied about. But in the case of Chris Petty, they seem apt.

The words “industry legend” are often bandied about. But in the case of Chris Petty, they seem apt.

Described by many as a star of the airline industry, former long-time United Airlines sales and marketing manager Chris Petty recently passed away in Sydney.

To summarise the deeds of a man who had spent more than 40 years with United in various capacities and achieved so much within the airline industry would be almost impossible. That in itself, says a lot about Chris.

Petty began his career with PanAm in the early 1980s as a customer service agent at London Heathrow, but found his true calling when he moved into airline sales.

During this period, he skilfully plied his trade in corporate and leisure business development before becoming the sales manager for United Vacations.

It was around 2004 when Chris and his family – wife Jan and sons Luke and Tom – settled down on the faraway shores of Sydney, Australia. And it was during his time down under, in the role of sales and marketing manager for United Airlines, that Chris cemented his position as an industry legend.

“A leader, mentor and friend”

A much-loved and admired figure, Petty was known for his affability, humour, positivity, story-telling and role as a mentor to many.

Not only did he welcome visiting colleagues from around the world, but he would also insist they join him for a drink at his beloved Skiff Club and even at his house for dinner with his family.

United Airlines regional manager Australia, New Zealand and Tahiti Tim Wallis called Chris “a leader, mentor and friend to all at UA who had the fortune of working with him”.

“That could also be said for the travel industry more broadly. He was a unique personality, one of those rare individuals who have a positive impact on the lives of everyone they meet,” Wallis said.

“His ability to lighten the mood, crack a joke (good and bad), and enjoy the moment was second to none. Chris cared first about the personal connection. He wanted to know about you, how you were doing, how your family was going, before asking about your work.

“He was always interested in you and willing to offer his advice and guidance, always sharing a laugh along the way.

“His positivity and humour were so enjoyed – a very very special person to have in your workplace, and in your life”.

Petty retired in 2019 to pursue other passions including golf and sailing.
