Australian tourism icon, renowned visionary and industry personality Bill King, founder of AAT Kings, has died in Melbourne aged 92, recognised as the pioneer who put the Australian outback on the map for local and international tourists.

King’s legendary journey began when he purchased two Land Rovers, an ex-army international ambulance and a Denning bus to launch Bill King’s Northern Safaris in the 1960s before designing and building 18-passenger vehicles called Desert Cruisers in the 1970s.

In the 1980s, AAT Coachlines purchased Bill King’s Northern Safaris and began operations as Bill King’s Australian Adventure Tours.

Founded on hope and grit, the AAT Kings brand was formed in 1984, offering an entirely new style of Australian tourism.

In 1997, AAT Kings joined The Travel Corporation’s Family of Brands and expanded into New Zealand in 1999.

AAT Kings now offers a variety of travel experiences in Australia and New Zealand.

Following the sale of AAT Kings, Bill King and his wife, Val, continued to develop tourism in the Northern Territory, as well as promoting Australia internationally and developing their Glynt by the Sea boutique private hotel on the Mornington Peninsula.

Often referred to as ‘The King of the Outback’ for his pivotal role in opening up tourism in the NT, King was recognised for his long-term contribution and leadership at ATEC’s 30th anniversary in 2003.

AAT Kings issued a statement about Bill King’s passing:

“It is with a great deal of sadness that AAT Kings acknowledges Bill King’s passing last night in Melbourne at the age of 92.”

“Bill was an icon of the Australian touring industry and one of the most recognised faces of tourism in this country. Bill was the ‘King’ of our business, founding Bill King’s Northern Safaris, which eventually became AAT Kings in 1980.

“Bill developed outback tours that took urbanites off the beaten track in his trademark custom 4WD vehicles and had an understanding and respectful inclusion of First Nations tourism that was ahead of his time.

“The respect Bill had for the land, its people and his sense of adventure are a great legacy and one that AAT Kings continue to honour.

“We pass on our greatest condolences to his family and friends. Vale Bill King.”

Karryon sends our sincere condolences to the King family and everyone at AAT Kings.
