Virtuoso Travel Week looks at future of luxury travel; shares key trends

After Virtuoso Travel Week 2022, which saw 5,000 travel professionals from more than 100 countries converge on Las Vegas in August, the global network has shared its insights into the future of luxury travel with key trends including sustainability and demand for travel advisor services.

This year’s event kept sustainability top of mind – a priority not just for the travel industry but for high-end travellers, too.

In a recent survey, 74 per cent of Virtuoso travellers said they’re willing to pay more to travel sustainably if they know where their money is going and 70 per cent agreed that travelling sustainably actually enhances their holiday experience.

Another thing that luxury travellers are willing to splurge on is value-added services, including those of travel advisors.

In response to pent-up demand, Virtuoso found US travellers are now booking trips an average of 58 days in advance for domestic hotel stays, and 80 days for international trips (compared to 2019’s 44 and 60 days, respectively).

The majority of Virtuoso travellers also said they’d be willing to visit a popular destination during the off-season to avoid crowds and overtourism.

And for new destinations to have on your radar, Virtuoso tips India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands and East Cape, a 45-minute drive north of Cabo San Lucas, as the beach destinations to watch.

With Silversea Cruises, Quark Expeditions and Lindblad Expeditions expanding their offering in Greenland next year, the icy isle is another location to add to bucket-list destinations.
