When you think of visiting Canada in winter, it may sound too chilly to even contemplate. To that, we say, SNOW WHAT!
Winter in the Great White North means SNOW and all the extraordinary fun that comes with it. Picture snowboarding, skiing and ski resorts…there’s no denying that if you’re visiting in Winter you must try one or all of the above. Figuring out where to start is the hard part but we’ve got some recommendations.
1. VISIT WINTERLUDE (OTTAWA)
No other country would celebrate sub-zero temperatures but the Ottawan’s do it in massive style. Check out the Winterlude Festival, on for the first 3 weekends in February every year.
The event boasts the world’s longest ice-skating rink (Rideau Canal), music concerts, ice dragon boat races & snow playgrounds designed for all ages. It’s an event not to be missed and the best part is, most of the events are free, meaning it can literally suit every budget.
2. SNOWMOBILING (BANFF)
If you’ve indulged in too much poutine and your body can’t take the strain of snowboarding or skiing, then snowmobiling is for you. Explore the incredible scenery that Banff has to offer, all from the comfort of your own personal skidoo (cool slang for snowmobiling).
Visit the Silver Mining Town from the 1900’s and let your tour guides lead you to open snow bowls, giving you free reign to tear up some powder or glide gracefully until your heart is content. With 100’s of tracks and places to choose from, this is an adventure that’s sure to sweeten your love of Canada!
3. MOUNTAIN TUBING (WHISTLER)
Maybe snowboarding isn’t for you, or you have the coordination of a fish but a wild sense of adventure, then visit the Coca-Cola Tube park located just above mid-station on Blackcomb Mountain.
With no skill set required, you can let your hair down and take in the incredible mountain views while you zoom down the mountainside. Don’t let the idea of tubing scare you off though, the track is designed for the explorers in all of us with children from the ages three and up allowed!
4. SLEIGH RIDES (LAKE LOUISE)
There is no better way to spend time with a loved one than drinking in the beauty of sparkling snow and blue sky, bundled beneath a blanket together on a horse-drawn sleigh.
Experience the serenity of Lake Louise in a beautiful sleigh ride, outside the famous Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. A horse-drawn sleigh ride is a perfect way to enjoy the winter wonderland during family outings, wedding parties, conventions and holidays.
5. SNOWBOARDING (BIG WHITE)
Big White! Where? Located in the Okanagan Valley, 45 min from the large town of Kelowna, Big White is the world’s best big unknown resort. It’s a giant skatepark covered in snow and trees, meaning it’s perfect for any snowboarding ability.
There are miles of easy slopes which can be enjoyed by the advanced rider hitting the rollers, while the beginner can learn to link their turns on the same pistes.
