Indulge in innovative luxury mixed with traditional Japanese design and hospitality onboard the new SPACIA X service between Tokyo and Nikko and experience rail like you’ve never done before.

Launched on July 15, 2023, SPACIA X is not your average train ride – it’s a luxurious journey from the dazzling, neon-lit streets of Tokyo to the serene landscapes of Nikko and Kinugawa.

With two new trains set to debut this March, Tobu Railway is rolling out the red carpet with six daily round trips between Asakusa and Nikko, ensuring convenience and flexibility for all adventurers. With over 100 years of connecting Japan by train, this new foray into luxury rail from Tobu Railway is really exciting!

Departing from the traditional area of Asakusa in Tokyo, home to both the historic Sensoji Temple AND the iconic TOKYO SKYTREE, read on to find out what you can experience on this new first-class train and all the exciting destinations you can visit along the way…

Experience Luxury on SPACIA X

Hop aboard the (nearly) carbon-neutral SPACIA X and prepare to be dazzled from the moment you step foot inside this first-class lounge on wheels. With its sleek design, plush interiors, comfy seating and refined fusion of Edo-period traditions and contemporary innovation, the train exudes sophistication at every turn. There are multiple seating options onboard, too, from compartments, sofas, and lounge-type seats right through to the Cockpit Suite which takes its inspiration from the cockpit of a private jet by offering panoramic views of the rolling scenery.

Whether you’re travelling solo, with family, or with friends, SPACIA X offers an exclusive setting for your journey through Japan’s breathtaking countryside. Serving onboard Nikko-style flavours and foods – such as traditional snacks like Asano pork jerky, smoked Itadakimasu trout, and yokan (sweet bean jelly) – as well as local beer and sake, it promises to be one sweet ride!

Journey to Nikko

As the train glides smoothly towards its destination, travellers are treated to panoramic views of the picturesque scenery outside their windows. Upon reaching Nikko, a city with over 1,200 years of history to its name, a whole world of cultural and natural wonders awaits your exploration. This is picture-postcard territory, so you’ll want to make sure your camera or phone is sufficiently charged. Marvel at the awe-inspiring Toshogu Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its intricate architecture and historical significance, and visit Nikko Edo Wonderland – a Japanese cultural theme park.

Afterwards, take a leisurely stroll through the tranquil grounds of Rinno-ji Temple, where the serenity of nature envelops you in its embrace. Perhaps finish the day with a workshop learning how to make Nikko’s famed soba noodles? For recommendations on where to stay, we’d suggest the superb Kanaya Hotel. It’s the oldest classic resort hotel in Japan, and is within walking distance to all the must-see attractions the city has to offer.

Exploring Oku-nikko

For those seeking adventure, a visit to Oku-Nikko promises unforgettable experiences amidst pristine wilderness. Hike through the rugged terrain of Senjogahara Marshland, where panoramic vistas of majestic mountains unfold before your eyes. You can also summit Mt. Nantai (2,468m) which is one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains and a sacred place of Shinto worship.

Also worth doing is a hike around the mystical beauty of Lake Chuzenji – Japan’s highest natural lake and created in the aftermath of a volcanic eruption over 20,000 years ago! And of course, no visit to the region is complete without taking a selfie in front of the 97-metre-tall Kegon Falls, recognised as amongst the top three most beautiful waterfalls in the country. Oku-nikko also boasts tons of hot spring retreats and traditional inns to rest up after a day spent immersed in this magical, natural landscape.

Relaxation in Kinugawa Onsen

As one of Japan’s most famous hot spring resorts, Kinugawa-Kawaji is the perfect place to have your first onsen experience, soaking in the volcanically-heated thermal waters amidst verdant mountains. Rejuvenating both body and mind, indulging in the restorative waters of the natural springs is the perfect way to end your experience in this gorgeous part of Japan. Set along the Kinugawa River, you can also go on a 40-minute boat tour through stunning natural scenery, or opt for something more thrilling with a rafting adventure through rapids.

Back on land, you can also channel your inner Ninja by dressing up as one and learning how to climb walls and throw shurikens! This resort town is also home to several luxurious ryokans (traditional Japanese hotels) where exceptional Japanese hospitality awaits. With its excellent transportation connections, Kinugawa-Kawaji also serves as an ideal hub for embarking on further adventures in Nikko.
