San Francisco continues to attract more and more Aussies every year and with new lift out of Melbourne starting 1 Sep 2018, here’s the new must-do list for foodies travelling to The City By The Bay.

From fine dining to finger food, this city has it all. The culinary scene in San Francisco is recognised as one of the best in the US and it’s constantly evolving.

FEELING FANCY

Browse the incredible artwork at SFMOMA in SOMA (South of Market) before heading to the famed museum’s Michelin starred restaurant, In Situ. With an exquisite menu inspired by cuisines around the world, this fine dining experience is a foodie’s delight.

Cookbook author Ayesha Curry is as well known for her husband – beloved NBA player, Stephen Curry. Talk about a power couple. Alongside Chef Michael Mina, Curry runs one of San Francisco’s hottest restaurants: International Smoke. This 80-seater provides an intimate dining experience with spectacular cuisine. Want to give it a go? Book now because this place is fully booked three months in advance. That’s just as popular as Alcatraz…

AUSSIE PRIDE

Mani Monday. Buy a drink, get a manicure 💁🏽‍♀️ #HotelSanFrancisco

Don’t worry, we’d never send you to some cheesy pub covered in kangaroo posters. However, we will send you to a killer new cocktail bar owned by three Aussies. Located in the Financial District (aka FiDi), Hotel San Francisco is a rock-themed bar with Instagram-worthy interior design and a solid small plates menu. While Americans try to figure out why this bar is called a hotel, you can enjoy a $10 happy hour Spanky Calaveras (tequila, habanero honey, passionfruit, basil, lime and tojin – YUM). PSA for the ladies: They offer free manicures with a drink purchase every Monday.

Love a good food tour? We do too. Lucky for us, San Francisco has some unreal foodie tours on offer. Experience a series of delectable treats at the San Francisco Ferry Building – a fully functional ferry terminal and gorgeous artisan food market housed in one of the city’s most historic buildings. Let Edible Excursions lead the way with treats and tips. Bonus: They offer an Alcatraz add on!

If you want to get amongst the locals, check out Avital Tours – progressive dining experiences exploring some of SF’s greatest neighbourhoods. Get your Mexican food fix in the Mission or enjoy the warm vibes and family-run institutions of North Beach, the city’s Little Italy. Prefer to keep your focus on the drinks? Check out SF on Tap and get to know the city’s best craft beer.

IN THE KNOW

Tucked away behind the sophisticated restaurant, The Cavalier in Union Square’s Hotel Zetta, Marianne’s is a throwback, glam rock speakeasy. Its eccentric décor and cracking drink list make this one worthwhile.

Taking it up a notch? Wilson and Wilson Detective Agency is accessed by a discreet door on Jones Street in Union Square. Knock and wait for a staff member to peek out and ask for the password (you’ll get one when you make a reservation). Inside is a relaxed and beautiful cocktail bar with several spaces to explore and many cocktails to imbibe. No password? Not to worry – you can still enjoy Bourbon and Branch, located just around the corner.

If you’re really into speakeasies, San Francisco has got something for you. The Speakeasy (a surprisingly obvious name) delivers guests with an interactive theatrical experience, bringing you straight back into the US prohibition era. Don your 20s-style attire and meet your guide at the designated spot – they’ll lead you to a secret watering hole where you’ll step back in time and be fully immersed in a unique and wild night. Watch the story unfold before you or get involved with the characters (within reason, of course) of this 1920s cabaret.
