Get it for the gram and go off the beaten track in beautiful Austria, you’ll be rewarded with some of Europe’s most picturesque places.
Austria is well known for for its jaw-dropping beauty but with a country so chock full of killer photo ops it’s tricky to narrow down where you are going to get that optimal Insta shot.

HALLSTATT
Until the 19th century, this village was only accessible by boat or narrow trails. Today, Hallstatt’s cobblestone lanes and market square will make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.
Hallstatt may be a small town, but it’s world-famous for its photogenic lake. While you’re there: don’t miss the Hallstatt skywalk for its panoramic views of the town, mountains and the lake.
OBERTRAUN
Just across Lake Hallstatt, you’ll find Obertraun — a village that’s home to just 740 people. It’s a smaller and less-frequented village, with less crowds and more of the peaceful surrounds of everyday Austrian life.
Obertraun is the ultimate starting point for hikes in the area, including walks in Koppenwinkel nature reserve. In the summer, head here for a swim in Hallstatt Lake’s stunningly clear water.
BAD GASTEIN
Bad Gastein is a true gem. The town has picked up popularity in the last few years, and has something for everybody.
It’s a fairytale town of grand and ‘grammable buildings, surrounded by national parks perfect for exploring — and also has excellent shopping and cafes for rainy days.
Be sure to see if one of their outdoor “full moon dinners” is taking place while you’ll be there.
LECH
If you’re after a trip with a bit of Alpine chic, Lech is for you. As a secluded village and exclusive ski resort, it’s become a popular choice for A-list names looking for time out of the spotlight.
While it might take a bit of extra effort to get there, it’s worth it — wherever you’re from, the sweeping views over the town will make you feel a million miles from home.
ST. CHRISTOPH
A short drive from Lech, you’ll find St. Christoph — a tiny, quiet and more traditional village. At almost 1,800m above sea level, it’s home to one of the Alps’ highest ski resorts, and the views are breathtaking.
Whether you’re a ski bunny, snowboarder or prefer to skip straight to the apres ski, you’ll be surrounded by a winter wonderland here.
WERFEN & HOHENWERFEN CASTLE
Perched atop a 600-metre high cliff, in the quaint village of Werfen, you’ll find Hohenwerfen Castle. The medieval castle has a long and dark history that starts in the 11th century, but is now open for public visits.
The views are spectacular — and during summer, they run a daily display featuring birds of prey. What’s more magical than eagles, hawks, falcons circling freely over a 900 year old castle?!
ALTAUSSEE
Altaussee is paradise for the life in the outdoors. A 7.5km trail wraps right around the lake, and you’ll spend the whole hike awed by the stunning 1800m-high mountains around you.
It’s a great place to visit year round, but summer is particularly popular for a swim in the lake and a visit to the Kieler and Wurf Waterfalls.
RAMSAU AM DACHSTEIN
If you like your views with a bit of adrenaline, head for the small towns that make up the municipality of Ramsau am Dachstein. The towns themselves are small and picturesque, but the jewel in the crown is the jaw-dropping view from the Dachstein glacier.
On clear days, it’s possible to see as far as Slovenia and the Czech Republic. Be warned: the suspension bridge, and the aptly named “Stairway to Nothingness” are not for the faint of heart.
