The streets of California are one of the best places to sample some of the West Coast’s best grub. Food trucks are a great way to sample creative and fabulous food at a fraction of the cost that you would pay in restaurants.

Here’s our top five picks of the food trucks you simply must not miss.

1. GUERILLA TACOS

Former fine-dining chef Wes Avila (who was trained under superstar chefs including Walter Manzke of L’Auberge Carmel and Alain Ducasse at Le Centre de la Formation in Paris) returned home to LA with the mission of bringing gourmet food to the streets.

His much-loved truck dishes finger licking menu items like sweet potato tacos with an almond chile, feta, fried corn or the butter chicken burrito with aged cheddar, chile, chipotle cream and black beans.

2. GREEN TRUCK

If you’re feeling like jumping on LA’s organic, sustainable eats bandwagon. The Green Truck is your place to it. Everything about this truck supports the movement, right down to the fact that the owners use leftover vegetable oil to power its wheels.

Here you’ll find organic, vegan-friendly food from the Mother Trucker vegan burger and line-caught albacore tuna sandwiches to Niman beef hot dogs and falafel wraps.

3. JOGASAKI SUSHI BURRITO TRUCK

This unique take on sushi works deliciously well. Sushi burritos are basically perfectly executed sushi rolls, wrapped in a soy paper tortilla.

The truck also offers super creative spicy tuna nacho featuring Spicy tuna on a bed of Doritos chips with avocado and eel sauce.

4. THE ORIGINAL GRILLED CHEESE TRUCK

Oh, grilled cheese. The ultimate adult comfort food.

The menu ranges from a classic cheese melt on French or wheat bread right through to their signature cheesy Mac and Rib toastie with house smoked BBQ pork, southern mac and cheese and caramelized onions. Mmmm.

5. COOLHAUS

Gourmet, hand-crafted ice cream sandwiches. Need I say more or is your mouth watering already?

Just choose your cookies and ice cream and Coolhaus will assemble your sandwich. Stay classic with vanilla sandwiched between two chocolate chip cookies are branch out with a seasonal special like a lemon rosemary cookie with balsamic fig and mascarpone ice cream. Every sammie comes in an edible wrapper. How cool is that!
