On yer bike! Buffalo Ride 2025 returns in May to empower women and girls

World Bicycle Relief has officially launched the Buffalo Ride 2025, a global cycling event returning on Sunday, 4 May. The goal is to raise more than AU$100,000 and mobilise women and girls through the power of bicycles.

World Bicycle Relief has officially launched the Buffalo Ride 2025, a global cycling event returning on Sunday, 4 May. The goal is to raise more than AU$100,000 and mobilise women and girls through the power of bicycles.

The annual event, which last year saw more than 130 riders across 15 countries, is once again calling on businesses, teams and individuals in the Australian and New Zealand travel industry to sign up, set a distance, raise funds and pedal for good.

With the support of The Intrepid Foundation and Quad Lock, the Buffalo Ride is not just about kilometres ridden—it’s about lives changed.

A global ride with a local impact

At the heart of the event is World Bicycle Relief’s mission: to provide life-changing Buffalo Bicycles to people, especially women and girls in rural communities across Africa, South America and Southeast Asia.

FACT: Over 30 million girls around the world are not attending secondary school right now.

Why? Many face long, unsafe journeys on foot to get to classrooms, health clinics, or water sources. Others are kept at home to complete unpaid domestic work or are married in childhood.

The solution? A simple, rugged bicycle that can withstand long distances and heavy loads—and change the trajectory of a young woman’s life.

“This bicycle is helping me, my family, and my community,” says Mercy, a Buffalo Bicycle test rider in Kisumu, Kenya, whose egg-selling business grew by 25% after gaining access to a bike.

Her story is just one of thousands that World Bicycle Relief hopes to multiply with this year’s ride.

After raising more than $67,000 in 2024, the 2025 edition of the Buffalo Ride is setting a bold new target: $100,000—enough to put hundreds of bikes into the hands of women and girls. Getting involved is easy!

Funds raised will go directly to World Bicycle Relief’s locally led programs, which provide access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.

Plus, you could win a cycling trip! Every time you raise AU$250 – the value of a Buffalo Bicycle – you’ll go into the draw for an Intrepid Cycling Tour up to the value of AU$3,500.

A cause the travel industry can get behind

The Buffalo Ride strongly aligns with travel businesses that want to support purposeful, high-impact initiatives with clear and measurable outcomes.

“This is about moving from intention to action,” says Intrepid Foundation General Manager Biheng Zhang. “It’s an opportunity for the travel industry to rally around something tangible—empowering women and girls through access and mobility.”

Companies can also pledge a fundraising target of $10,000, with tailored participation options for staff and leadership teams.

A company pledge could look like:

  • 50 staff members raising $200 each
  • $5,000 corporate donation to match team fundraising
  • 5 senior leaders setting $2,000 individual targets
  • Or a single $10k company donation

All pledging businesses will be celebrated across the Intrepid Foundation and World Bicycle Relief platforms, helping drive broader awareness and momentum.

Every dollar counts!
