27 July was National Tree Day, Australia’s largest community tree-planting event. It’s a reminder that small actions, when multiplied, make a measurable impact. At Karryon, we’ve been offsetting 100% of our travel emissions with Ecologi since 2019. This is how we do it, what we’ve learned, and how your business can start doing the same today.
Travel is central to everything we do, which means emissions are, too. We believe the travel industry has a responsibility to reduce its impact and work in step with the planet and its people.
The earth is both our product and our promise. It’s what we sell, what we showcase, and what inspires every trip we take. If we want to keep exploring its beauty and offering it to others, then protecting it isn’t optional; it’s essential. Offsetting alone isn’t the solution, but it’s a place to start.
What our offsets support
We offset through Ecologi, a certified B Corp that funds climate projects across the globe. These include reforestation and mangrove planting, clean cookstove and solar projects, wind farms, and verified carbon removal.
Our offsets have contributed to projects in Australia, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, Peru and beyond. Each tonne of carbon removed or avoided is traceable and publicly documented.
Since 2019, our impact includes:
- 34.79 tonnes of CO2 avoided or removed
- 4,756 trees funded
- 28 global climate projects supported
Why Ecologi?
We know that offsetting isn’t without its critics. Some carbon offset projects have been called out for lacking transparency, failing to deliver promised emissions reductions, or even causing harm to local communities. There are valid concerns about greenwashing, where companies use offsetting to appear environmentally responsible without taking real steps to reduce their footprint.
That’s why credibility and transparency matter. It’s why we chose a partner like Ecologi and why we continually assess how we travel and where our contributions go. We chose Ecologi for its third-party verification, transparent reporting, and ease of use. Their projects are independently audited and verified to Gold Standard or VCS, and all activity is published in real time.
This isn’t a set-and-forget solution
Offsetting is not a one-time pledge or a line in a sustainability report. It only works when you treat it as an ongoing commitment.
At Karryon, we constantly review how we travel and what our impact looks like. We stay across new developments in carbon capture, alternative fuels and emerging technologies. We use our offsets to give back, promote and travel more responsibly through the world we so love to explore.
Getting started
If your business is looking to start offsetting, begin with what you can measure:
- Flights
- Hotel nights
- Transfers and car hire
Tools like Ecologi’s calculator, Climate Active’s guides for Australian SMEs, and Carbon Positive Australia can help estimate your emissions.
Once you know your footprint, you can:
- Set monthly or annual contributions
- Link offsets to business activities
- Track and share your results
Pair with better practices
Offsetting is more powerful when paired with smarter decisions:
- Choose sustainable and Indigenous-owned suppliers
- Travel less often but more purposefully
- Build responsible messaging into your sales and marketing
Offsetting should be one tool in a bigger toolkit—not a bandaid.
What we’ve learned after five years
Offsetting our travel has taught us that:
- It’s easier than it looks
- It’s cheaper than most assume
- It only gets stronger the more you measure and refine
Offsetting our travel has shown us that small, consistent action adds up. Every decision to measure, reduce, or remove emissions is an investment in the future of our industry. This isn’t about optics. It’s about survival. If we want to keep selling travel tomorrow, we need to protect what makes it possible today.
Karryon also proudly funds and supports organisations that protect culture, biodiversity and ocean health, including welcometocountry.com, rainforest-alliance.org, and seashepherd.org.au.
