AFTA: More understanding, respect and support for Travel Agents please

Australians are being urged to talk to their travel agents as travellers face overwhelming, disruptive and often costly challenges with erratic airline schedules and frequent last-minute flight cancellations, according to AFTA.

The Australian Federation of Travel Agents (AFTA) is reporting that more travellers are finding their plans completely and frustratingly disrupted as the holiday season period kicks into gear.

Navigating travel challenges

When airlines cancel one sector of a booking, it leaves passengers with no flights at all or if there are seats available, they are not at the same price due to limited availability and associated cost increases.

Many airlines only offer a refund, which doesn’t help the traveller get to their destination, and if replacement flights are available they are invariably more expensive than the original ticket price.

As an advocate for travel advisors and the industry, AFTA is calling on frustrated travellers to show support and respect as their agents work on solutions for these challenging situations.

“The heartbreak of holidays and travel plans going off the rails as a result of flight cancellations is a regular occurrence right now and often a costly experience as high cancellation fees on hotel accommodation typically apply by the time an airline cancels your flight,” AFTA CEO Dean Long said.

“Our members are dealing with regular calls from desperate clients and we understand the frustration, but we also ask everyone to please remember that where we can find replacement fares, those fares are typically double and triple the original cost due to the very limited availability and price increases.

“Australia’s travel professionals are doing everything they can to help Australians keep travelling despite these challenges, and all they’re asking for is your understanding, respect and support as they do their very best to find solutions.”
