Sky-high Synthony: Air New Zealand drops the beat at 30,000 feet for one-off concert

Talk about orchestral manoeuvres in the dark: Air New Zealand will treat trans-Tasman passengers to Synthony in the Sky, an inflight EDM and classical music concert featuring some of Aotearoa’s top DJs and electronic acts backed by a live orchestra.

Talk about orchestral manoeuvres in the dark: Air New Zealand will treat trans-Tasman passengers to Synthony in the Sky, an inflight EDM and classical music concert featuring some of Aotearoa’s top DJs and electronic acts backed by a live orchestra.

The one-off event will take place on Flight NZ1331, departing Auckland for Sydney at 4:20pm on 4 December 2025, transporting NZ’s successful live music event to the sky.

Headlining the live experience is a DJ set from NZ’s Shapeshifter along with DJ Dick Johnston and special guests from Synthony.

The national carrier also has a natural synergy with the event. Captain David Elmsly, a pilot of more than 20 years, is a founder of Synthony.

“Bringing this to life in the air is something I never imagined when we first started out – and now I get to see it take off in a whole new way. It’s a surreal, full-circle moment that combines two of my passions and I can’t wait to see it come to life on board,” he said.

Air NZ CCO Jeremy O’Brien added that this is a one-off flight – with no encores.

“We’re not just flying you across the Tasman. We’re flying you straight into the heart of a one-of-a-kind music experience offering a completely unique onboard moment – an immersive, high-energy celebration at altitude,” he said.

Air New Zealand's Thirteen Forty Five is coming soon.
The scene is set for the one-of-a-kind musical experience.

“We love creating moments our customers will talk about long after they land and Synthony in the Sky is exactly that – an unforgettable, one-off experience,” he said.

One-way tickets for the exclusive flight are now on sale from NZD$549 and include a Golden Circle pass to Synthony at the Sydney Opera House Forecourt on 5 December 2025.

Air NZ also has a three-day trans-Tasman sale until 22 August 2025.
