AirAsia’s plans to become the world’s first truly global budget airline have taken a massive hit, with the cancellation of the low-cost carrier’s much-hyped Kuala Lumpur-Bahrain (BAH)-London Gatwick (LGW) route.
The route, which was key to AirAsia’s global expansion plans, would have been the carrier’s only European service and first to fly through the airline’s new Bahrain hub – its first strategic centre outside South-East Asia and a crucial piece of the puzzle for a network connecting Asia, the Middle East and Australia.
With its 27 August 2026 launch looming, the airline says it pulled the plug on the route “due to the prolonged geopolitical instability in West Asia”.
“This decision was made in view of ongoing safety and operational considerations, with the well-being of our guests and crew remaining our highest priority,” it states in an online message.
“AirAsia X will continue to closely monitor developments and actively assess its flight schedules based on evolving geopolitical conditions.”
The airline says guests will be notified directly, with compensation including full refunds and travel credits.
However, the carrier will not be providing compensation for “missed tours, connecting flights with other airlines, cancellation for hotel bookings or any other out-of-pocket expenses incurred due to this route cancellation”.
Customers booking through third parties have been advised to contact their travel advisors for further assistance.
“We are doing our best to minimise the disruption by providing as much forward notice as possible with listed service recovery options for affected guests,” it adds.
The announcement comes amid a challenging time for Bahrain, which has been caught up in the US-Iran war due to its position in the Persian Gulf.
Just days ago, the Australian Government upgraded its travel advice for the Kingdom to the highest level (four), telling Aussies not to travel to or through the country.
“There’s a risk of further escalation in the coming days, including military attacks on civilian infrastructure,” DFAT’s Smartraveller website states.

With Bahrain’s security in doubt, it’s been announced that one ot its biggest events, the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix, will be moved to Malaysia from 2-4 October.
As such, Malaysia-based AirAsia has dropped a “KL Snap” campaign, offering Aussies a range of flight and hotel packages starting from AU$379 out of Perth.
In other AirAsia news, AirAsia has also announced the suspension of its Kuala Lumpur-Tashkent (Uzbekistan) service from 2 September 2026.
The carrier says it will “continue to closely monitor developments and actively assess its flight schedules based on evolving market conditions and demand patterns”.
