A new Dutch design is hoping to change airlines’ traditional ‘one size fit all’- seat policy by offering an aircraft seat for larger passengers.

The new product is called the SANTO seat —Special Accommodation Needs for Toddlers and Overweight Passengers.

The SANTO seats would be placed at the rear of the aircraft cabin occupying otherwise unused space.

The actual size of the chair would be one-and-a-half times the width of a normal seat.

The seat is ideal for overweight passengers and for passengers with small children.

The SANTO chair is not only designed for larger people but also for parents travelling with young children since the seat can accommodate a baby chair which could be securely fastened while still leaving enough room for an adult passenger.

The Dutch company – SII Deutschland responsible for the design won the the top prize in the “Passenger Comfort Hardware” category of this year’s prestigious Crystal Cabin Awards which is “the only international award for excellence in aircraft interior innovation.”

The new SANTO seats were announced after Airbus last week announced their new shrinking seats, fitting an extra fifth seatinto each economy row, which currently have 4 seats, of their new fleet.

The Dutch designers claim that the new seat for overweight passengers would be safer than a standard economy chair

Do you think airlines should start to incorporate more size diversity in their seating?
