Alan Joyce Suggests $19 Sydney To Melbourne Jetstar flights

Qantas CEO Alan Joyce is floating the idea of cutting domestic Jetstar fares on the Sydney to Melbourne route to as low as $19 to create more demand for travel once restrictions ease.

He made the suggestion yesterday following the release of Qantas’ investor update which you can read more about here.

“On Melbourne-Sydney you could see Jetstar have $39 airfares, you could see $19 airfares and we’ll still cover our cash costs on those flights,” Alan Joyce said.

At present, Qantas has had to reduce its domestic operations to 5 per cent of what they were before COVID-19.

Alan Joyce was, however, quick to say that there is “light at the end of the tunnel” with the hopes of travel restrictions being lifted soon.

“Australia has done an amazing job of flattening the curve and we’re optimistic that domestic travel will start returning earlier than first thought, but we clearly won’t be back to pre-coronavirus levels anytime soon.”

International travel (with the exception of New Zealand) won’t be so quick to resume though.

In fact, yesterday Alan Joyce confirmed that Qantas’ famous “Project Sunrise” plan to fly non-stop to New York and London is on hold for now.

“We do think there is a huge potential for Project Sunrise but the time is not right now given the impact on world travel,” he said yesterday.
