Grounded: ANA Group’s AirJapan airline to cease operations

Medium-haul low-cost airline, AirJapan will operate its last flight in late March 2026 after its parent company, All Nippon Airways (ANA) Group, decided to wind up the brand.

Medium-haul low-cost airline, AirJapan will operate its last flight in late March 2026 after its parent company, All Nippon Airways (ANA) Group, decided to wind up the brand.

“We would like to announce our decision to cease all AirJapan (NQ) flight operations as of March 2026,” the carrier posted on its website on Thursday.

According to AirJapan, its last day of operations will be Saturday, 28 March 2026 (technically 29 March, following the return flights to Japan).

For customers with existing reservations, “no special procedures are required”.

For customers making new reservations, “you may continue to book flights on this official AirJapan website”.

“While we have operated flights under both the AirJapan and ANA brands, we will operate ANA-branded flights exclusively from the next fiscal year onward,” the Tokyo Narita-based carrier states.

AirJapan was founded in 1990 as a charter airline but rebranded as a low-cost arm of ANA Group in 2022, with an IATA designation of NQ.

While it had the backing of Japan’s largest airline, the carrier operated just two aircraft – Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners – flying between Tokyo Narita and Seoul, Bangkok and Singapore.

With the closure of AirJapan, ANA Group will now focus on its significantly larger LCC, Peach.

Headquartered in Osaka, Peach operates 35 aircraft to 37 destinations within Japan and East Asia.

Earlier this year, ANA unveiled what it describes as the world’s largest business class seat for a mid-sized aircraft. The new seat, named THE Room FX, was introduced on ANA’s Boeing 787-9 fleet in July, with its international rollout, including Sydney and Perth routes, expected to begin in fiscal year 2026.

Travel to Japan continues to skyrocket from Australia, with recent ABS figures showing double-digit growth in visitation for the country.
