City to Outback: Qantas takes off to Broken Hill from April

The flying Kangaroo has announced it will be launching new flights to hop directly from Sydney to Broken Hill; adding the iconic Aussie Outback town to its domestic route network for the first time.

The flying Kangaroo has announced it will be launching new flights to hop directly from Sydney to Broken Hill; adding the iconic Aussie Outback town to its domestic route network for the first time.

From 8 April 2022, Qantas will operate two weekly return flights between Sydney and Broken Hill with its 50-seat Q300 aircraft, ending Regional Express Airlines (REX) 18-year monopoly on the route.

QantasLink CEO John Gissing said the service will create stronger connections for the far west of New South Wales for both business and leisure travellers.

“Broken Hill is a unique Australian town and as the national carrier, we are thrilled to be adding it to our route map today,” said Mr Gissing.

“We know many Australians are eager for their next holiday destination and outback New South Wales has plenty to offer. This new route will make it easier for travellers to experience Broken Hill’s rich history, growing cultural scene and spectacular natural surrounds.

“QantasLink customers and Frequent Flyers will be able to earn and use Qantas Points on the new flights to enjoy premium service, including complimentary food and drinks, checked baggage and access to Qantas lounges in Sydney,” he said.

REX has been the only carrier operating in the region since 2004, with Horizon being the last competitor.

Broken Hill Regional Council Mayor Tom Kennedy welcomed the announcement of the new Qantas services as they will provide the local community with additional choice and flexibility.

“Air travel is of vital importance to our community for tourism, health, and education, and I’d like to thank Qantas for providing locals with more options and more flexibility by offering their services out of Broken Hill.”

Broken Hill is the newest destination to join QantasLink’s extensive regional network, with the airline now operating flights to 57 regional and rural towns across Australia.

The flights will operate on a Monday and Friday to offer Broken Hill residents an easy long weekend in the city and allow visitors to make the most out of their outback exploration.

Fares will start from $269 one-way, but to celebrate the new destination, Qantas is offering a special sale fare starting from $189 one-way, available for sale until 21 February, unless sold out prior.
