The Dream-liner continues for Air New Zealand

Air New Zealand continues to increase competition amongst Asia Pacific carriers, with plans to receive two new revolutionary Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.

Air New Zealand continues to increase competition amongst Asia Pacific carriers, with plans to receive two new revolutionary Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.

The two planes are in addition to the seven aircraft already on order (scheduled for delivery between 2014 and 2017).

All together the nine new aircraft will increase the airline’s 787 fleet to 12 within three years.

This will make the airline’s 787-9 fleet the fourth largest in Asia Pacific, following All Nippon Airways’ 44 on order; Japan Airlines’ 20; and Air China’s 15.

The first of Air New Zealand’s new aircraft is expected for delivery late 2017 and the second in the latter half of 2018.

The airline also has another six 787-9 purchase options still available.

Christopher Luxon, Air New Zealand’s chief executive, said investment in new aircraft is a result of strong commercial results.

“As the airline’s commercial performance continues to improve, we are focused on reinvesting our profits directly back into the business on products, services and fleet to further enhance the customer experience and to ensure the business remains strong and competitive.”

He added that the 787-9 is a key component to growth because of its flexibility.

Earlier this year, Air New Zealand took delivery of the world’s first Dreamliner 787-9.

Since, it has operated the aircraft on flights to Sydney and more recently to Perth.

The plane has also made its way to Shanghai and Tokyo.

As well as offering fuel-efficient flying, the Air New Zealand Boeing 787-9 offers passenger comfort – with an economy seat pitch of 79-81-centimetres.

The aircraft also has Air New Zealand’s trademark economy ‘Skycouch’ – a row of three economy seats that turn into an area where guests can stretch out and relax. It can also be used as a play area for the kids.

The plane also played a role in Air New Zealand’s second consecutive win for AirlineRatings.com’s ‘Airline of the Year’.

The airline rating website’s editor-in-chief said the airline has one of the youngest in the fleet and its service is ‘right and priced accordingly’.
