Face-off: Masks no longer mandatory on international flights to Australia

Masks are no longer required on international and domestic flights to Australia as of 9 September 2022 with face coverings now only required on some outbound overseas services, according to the local rules in the destination country.

Masks are no longer required on international and domestic flights to Australia as of 9 September 2022 with face coverings now only required on some outbound overseas services, according to the local rules in the destination country.

This rollback of COVID restrictions follows the earlier announcement of the mask mandate lifting on domestic flights within Australia on 9 September.

Federal Health Minister Mark Butler said the change was endorsed by the Chief Medical Officer, however he encouraged Aussies travelling overseas to be mindful of the continuing risk of COVID-19 and take personal precautions to stay safe.

The scrapping of masks on domestic and international flights brings Australia into line with the current regulations in the US, UK and other European countries.

Qantas and Virgin Australia announced they will continue to make masks available on board for passengers who wish to remain masked now that the requirement is voluntary.

The seven-day mandatory isolation will remain in place for those working in high-risk settings and for people who are still sick.

The COVID-19 isolation period was also reduced from seven days to five days from Friday 9 September for people without symptoms.
