FLIGHTS GROUNDED: Jet Airways suspends flights as it seeks financial aid

Europe’s unfortunate streak with collapsing airlines seems to be running off in the East where Jet Airways has today suspended all flights as it seeks financial aid.

Thousands of flyers have been affected by the troubled airline’s grounding, which comes days after management admitted to difficulties with payment for fuel and other critical services bills.

In an online statement, the airline said it was “deeply saddened” to suspend all domestic and international operations, but felt it had no choice given that it could not secure emergency funding from a consortium of Indian lenders.

“This decision has been taken after painstaking evaluation of all alternatives and after receiving guidance and advice on the same from the Board of Directors of Jet Airways.”

Despite financial rejections, the airline’s leaders wrote that they will continue seeking potential investors who agree that “India is better off with a flying Jet Airways”.

In the meantime, travellers booked to fly with the airline today and on future dates will be contacted via text message, email or phone call. They’ll be able to request a refund for their confirmed bookings.

Those who booked through a Travel Agent are being advised to reach out to their consultant to process the refund.

“We sincerely and profusely apologise for the disruption to your travel plans. We would like to thank you for your continued patronage, support and loyalty over the years.”
