The US city of theme parks, cruising and sun – Florida – was shaken over the weekend, when five people were killed in a shooting at Fort Lauderdale Airport.
According to reports, the gunman, who has now been identified as a former member of the US military, flew into the international gateway from Alaska.
Esteban Santiago disembarked the flight and picked up his checked luggage, which is believed to have been concealing his weapon.
He then walked into the bathroom and later emerged near baggage carousels where he opened fire on unsuspecting travellers.
Five people were killed in the shooting and six others wounded before police disarmed and arrested him.
The 26-year-old has since been charged with an act of violence at an international airport resulting in death, which carries a maximum punishment of execution.
Meanwhile in Australia, Travel Agents with customers currently visiting Florida rushed to get in contact with their clients and ensure their safety.
Among them was Tammy Savill, who said on Facebook that she woke up on Saturday morning to the news of the shooting and a text message from her clients saying their flight had been diverted to Fort Lauderdale.
She said her heart “skipped more than a few beats” as she attempted to get a hold on them.
“Clients located safe and sound and had already left, thank god.”

Despite the attack, Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) continues to advise Australians to exercise normal safety precautions in the US.
