In a highly anticipated move, Vietjet has commenced operations in Australia, touching down at Melbourne Airport for the first time on 9 April with Sydney services to follow this week and Brisbane flights to start in June.
Vietnamese low-cost carrier Vietjet flew from Ho Chi Minh City to Melbourne on its 377-seat Airbus 330, offering a new direct service from Australia to Vietnam and beyond.
Vietjet operates an extensive short-haul network in South-East Asia, including India, Japan and South Korea, with flights from Melbourne timed to provide convenient connections in the region.
The airline will initially operate three return services each week, departing Melbourne on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 12:30am.
Vietjet plans to increase to daily operations by December 2024 for an annual increase of 136,000 seats.
Melbourne Airport Chief of Aviation Jim Parashos said Vietjet’s arrival would significantly boost seat capacity to Vietnam and increased choice for passengers heading to the region.
“Victorians can’t get enough of visiting Vietnam, it has consistently been one of our top 10 international destinations,” Mr Parashos said.
“Low-cost fares will make the trip even more appealing to leisure and business travellers and people wanting to connect with family and friends at both ends of the route.
“Victoria is home to a large Vietnamese community making the city a key inbound market.”
Vietjet’s non-stop Brisbane–Ho Chi Minh City route will start on 16 June 2023 with more Australian cities to follow.
