Is this the end of the flight attendant?

Technology companies are becoming more creative with their onboard tech, even coming up with designs that could potentially replace the flight attendant.

Sell GMBH – a German division of plane equipment company Zodiac Aerospace – has designed a new food delivery system, which would see passengers receive their meals via a ‘sushi bar carousel’.

Still under development, the carousel belt would be hidden under the cabin floor. Passengers would access it by pressing a demand button that would instantly send meals to their seat, Skift.com reported.

According to the company, this would relieve flight attendants of their food delivery duties – wheeling trolleys up and down aisles – and allow them to focus on other tasks.

Additionally, the company expects passengers to benefit from the design because of it would free up cabin space and provide unobstructed aisles.

While it seems like it could be the way of the future, there is still one concern – how will non-aisle passengers access their food? Will they have to reach over other passengers to retrieve it?

Well actually, Sell GMBH proposed having carousels around each passenger, which would create more leg room and space around every seat.

This is the second time this year that technology companies have come up with tech alternatives for inflight staff.

Last month the aviation industry announced ‘pilot-less planes‘ that would see aircraft operating in auto-mode or under the control of ‘ALIAS’ – a robot that uses voice recognition technology to speak and listen to commands.
