Good news internet addicts (so, everyone), engineers have finished installing one-kilometre of cabling and a Viasat antenna to the roof of one of Qantas’ A330s.
So what’s the big deal? Doesn’t the aircraft already have a zillion cables? What’s another one-km? ?
It does have a lot of cables BUT this new one lets flyers connect to fast AND free Wi-Fi. ?
The good news was revealed by Qantas staff via the airline’s online blog called Roo Tales today, where they said the aircraft is the first in the A330 fleet to receive speedy wi-fi.
But wait, before flyers can connect mid-flight the plane needs to complete a certification process, which includes a series of grounded tests.
However, tests won’t take more than a few weeks, as Qantas expects to have two fully Wi-Fi capable A330s up in the air by the end of June, along with half of the 737 fleet.
We’re on the way to surfing the net!
By the end of 2018, 75 percent of the combined domestic 737 and A330 fleet of 80 aircraft will have Wi-Fi, with the remaining aircraft to be equipped during 2019.
