Speculations of Qantas’ network expansion to include non-stop flights from Brisbane to Chicago were right on the mark because the carrier just confirmed it’s happening!
Qantas has just announced that its US network will grow with a new direct flight from Brisbane to Chicago AND Brisbane to San Francisco.
Pending approval from the US Department of Transportation (DOT), the services will run from late April 2020 with American Airlines BUT will be operated on the Flying Kangaroo’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.
The Brisbane-Chicago services will take 16 hours and 20 minutes to complete one-way and will run four times weekly. It will give travellers the option of connecting to additional US cities via American Airlines.
Meanwhile, the Brisbane-San Francisco services will operate three times weekly and will complement the carrier’s existing flights to the Bay City from Sydney and Melbourne.
Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce described the new routes as “fantastic news for Queensland” and said the launch of 787 flights would be a win for customers and tourism.
“This will give Qantas and American Airlines customers unprecedented access. These flights will make it one stop from Chicago to Hamilton Island or San Francisco to Townsville.”

These new routes would see a total of 14 weekly services between Brisbane and the US, including the daily 787 Brisbane to Los Angeles service that continues to New York.
