Popular US destinations Chicago and Miami could be a direct flight away from Australia with their addition to the potential list of Qantas’ ultra-long-haul flights planned as part of Project Sunrise and enabled by a fleet of next-generation Airbus A350-1000s.
The US cities join New York and London as ultra-long-haul flight candidates, scheduled to start flying by the end of 2025 from Sydney.
The new routes will offer direct non-stop services from Australia to several global cities, including four US cities, four destinations in Europe, one city in South Africa and one city in Brazil.
Once all non-stop services commence, Qantas will connect London, Paris and Frankfurt to Sydney and Melbourne. Non-stop US services from Sydney will fly direct to Dallas, New York, Miami and Chicago.
Melbourne passengers will also be able to fly direct to New York, Chicago and Miami.

Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said the next-generation aircraft will improve how people travel around Australia and overseas through lower emissions, longer range, less noise and better economics.
“These newer aircraft and engines will reduce emissions by at least 15 per cent if running on fossil fuels, and significantly better when run on Sustainable Aviation Fuel,” Mr Joyce said.
“This brings us closer to our commitment to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. Project Sunrise will be carbon neutral from day one.”

Qantas launched direct Perth-Rome flights in June and will commence direct Perth–Johannesburg services from 1 November 2022.
