JetBlue offers passengers a free flight... but there's a big catch

It would have been one of the happiest moments to ever occur at 32,000-feet when cabin crew on a recent JetBlue service announced everyone on board was receiving a free flight.

It would have been one of the happiest moments to ever occur at 32,000-feet when cabin crew on a recent JetBlue service announced everyone on board was receiving a free flight.

But there was one pretty tricky catch – everyone on the aircraft had to agree on the destination of the freebie.

The incentive was delivered to some 150 passengers as part of the carrier’s ‘Reach Across the Aisle’ social experiment, which aimed to find out if a free JetBlue flight was enough to encourage its guests to compromise.

“Seems like the world has been struggling to come to an agreement. People everywhere are digging in and holding their and refusing to compromise,” the JetBlue employee said in the video above.

With no idea what to expect, the airline told guests they could be a part of history and receive a free round-trip flight to anywhere in the carrier’s network but “the entire plane has to unanimously decide that destination”.

Of course, the reaction on the aircraft was as you’d expect – gasps, smiles and a bit of shock. Love this lady’s reaction:

Everyone was given a red and blue hand paddle, which they were told to use during the voting process.

First they had to settle on an international or domestic flight. After a bashful start, they all eventually decided on international (duh!)

The next question was a little trickier – they had to choose between Costa Rica, Aruba, Jamaica, Columbia, St Lucia and Turks and Caicos.

After some careful voting and a little compromising, the options came down to Costa Rica and Turks and Caicos. But there wasn’t enough listening to get a unanimous decision, which led the JetBlue employee to say:

“Remember we all go or no one goes. So take this time to talk to your neighbours and listen to each other’s arguments for and against their chosen destination.”

People started cheering for their destination, there was a little snapping between aisles and there were even a few very strong opinions. This guy cracked us up.

But ultimately they came to an agreement and it was… watch the video below to see where they’re headed:
