From Tassie to the Hunter: Jetstar connects Hobart and Newcastle for the first time ever

Jetstar will launch the first-ever direct Hobart–Newcastle route, operating seasonal services taking off between 2 December 2025 and 21 April 2026 with one-way fares on sale now for just 24 hours (until 9 October 2025) from $59.

Jetstar will launch the first-ever direct Hobart–Newcastle route, operating seasonal services taking off between 2 December 2025 and 21 April 2026 with one-way fares on sale now for just 24 hours (until 9 October 2025) from $59.

The new direct Hobart–Newcastle route will make aviation history as the first link between the two cities and forms part of Qantas Group’s Tasmanian expansion.

It will operate thrice weekly on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday on Jetstar’s Airbus A320 aircraft and provide more than 22,000 seats on the route during the season.

Jetstar CEO Stephanie Tully said Jetstar’s new route will provide a major tourism boost across Hobart and the Hunter.

“Jetstar’s new direct seasonal service between these two cities will create another 22,000 low-cost seats a year, further strengthening inbound tourism,” she said.

It comes as QantasLink relaunches two routes from Hobart with Perth in September 2025 and Canberra to start from 26 October.

Together, the three routes will boost Qantas Group capacity by more than 76,000 seats per year in and out of the Tassie capital.

The Group will also invest in a brand-new Qantas Lounge at Hobart Airport, which is due to open in 2027.

Hobart Airport COO Matt Cocker said the new direct flights to Newcastle will unlock the largest population area in Australia that the hub does not already service and offer a new travel option for travellers in the Hunter region.

“This is great news for Tasmania’s tourism and hospitality businesses with well over one million new potential travellers across the Newcastle Hunter region,” he said.

“Having the chance to travel direct between Hobart and Newcastle, rather than via Sydney, will save travellers time and money.”

Newcastle Airport CEO Linc Horton said: “Newcastle is one of Australia’s fastest-growing centres. Being directly connected to Tasmania’s capital is a big deal for both communities. Our region wants to travel and deserves to have these important connections available to them.”
