Jetstar launches its latest international route, boosting Trans-Tasman travel

Jetstar’s trans-Tasman expansion is in full swing, with the airline’s first-ever flight between Cairns and Christchurch taking off today.

Jetstar’s trans-Tasman expansion is in full swing, with the airline’s first-ever flight between Cairns and Christchurch taking off today.

The low-cost carrier says the launch marks a major milestone in improving direct travel options between New Zealand’s South Island and tropical North Queensland.

“Our first return service on the Christchurch to Cairns route is a proud moment for us as we continue to expand in New Zealand, and we’re thrilled to see the enthusiasm from both Kiwis and Australians,” Jetstar’s Executive Manager, Customer, Jenn Armor said, adding that the new route will provide around 70,000 seats annually, “boosting tourism opportunities for both New Zealand and tropical North Queensland”.

“This new connection links two stunning destinations and highlights our dedication to providing low-fares and allowing people to take off more.”

The year-round service will operate three times a week, providing more options for Kiwis to swap alpine scenery for the Great Barrier Reef – and for North Queenslanders, vice versa.

Flight JQ135 will operate on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, departing CNS at 10.55pm and arriving in CHC at 5.50am the next day. The return leg, JQ136, will run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, leaving CHC at 7.05am and landing in CNS at 10.40am.

Christchurch Airport CEO Justin Watson flagged the opportunities the new route opened up for two-way tourism.

“This route gives Kiwis a quick and easy way to experience Tropical North Queensland while welcoming more Aussie visitors to our backyard,” he remarked.

Cairns Airport CEO Richard Barker, meanwhile, said the new flights made Trans-Tasman travel easier and cheaper, and came at the perfect time.

“Jetstar’s direct flights from Christchurch to Cairns will slash hours and cost from the journey, giving passengers every reason to book the holiday they’ve been waiting for,” he stated.

“This service is commencing at an ideal time, ahead of the lengthy Easter school holidays when families and friends are keen to reconnect.”

Celebrated on both sides of the ditch, the inaugural flights mark the next phase of Jetstar’s New Zealand expansion, with three more trans-Tasman routes launching soon: Hamilton to Sydney and the Gold Coast, plus Dunedin to the Gold Coast.

The airline is also boosting its fleet, with seven new aircraft landing in 2025, including a Christchurch-based Airbus A320.

To mark the occasion, Jetstar is offering one-way fares from Cairns to Christchurch starting at $238.
