Jetstar has unlocked a first-of-its-kind link between Newcastle and Hobart, opening a direct pathway between the two cities and expanding aviation and tourism capacity across the Hunter and Tasmania.
The inaugural JQ489 departs this afternoon with more than 160 passengers on board. It begins a seasonal run of three weekly return services operated by Jetstar’s A320 fleet through to 21 April 2026.
More than 22,000 seats are now available on the route across the season.
Growing Newcastle’s network reach
The launch adds momentum to the Hunter’s network growth. Six weeks ago, Jetstar reinstated international flying from Newcastle, operating four services a week to Bali (Denpasar) with Singapore connections.
Combined with existing domestic flights to Brisbane, Cairns, Gold Coast and Melbourne, Jetstar now moves more than 770,000 seats in and out of Newcastle annually.

The direct link has been positioned as a driver of two‑way visitation, supporting Tasmania’s nature and cultural draws while opening the Hunter’s coastline and wine country to new audiences.
Jetstar Executive Manager Commercial Lyle Brownscombe said the airline is proud to switch on the new access point.
“This is the first time Newcastle and Hobart have ever been connected by air, and we’re thrilled to be making this route a reality,” he said.
“Hunter residents can now reach Tasmania’s wilderness, food and wine experiences without the hassle of connecting through other cities, saving time and money.
“This service will also boost tourism across Newcastle and the Hunter, allowing more people than ever to experience this region’s beaches and wineries.”
Newcastle Airport CEO Linc Horton said the milestone reinforces the airport’s role as it grows towards being a national and international hub.
“Today’s inaugural flight to Hobart strengthens our region’s access to the places that matter,” he said.
“The direct connection to Hobart is a key destination and we thank Jetstar’s continued confidence in our region.”
Hobart Airport COO Matt Cocker said the direct service unlocks a new catchment for Tasmania’s visitor economy.
“The new direct flight to Newcastle unlocks the largest population area in Australia that we weren’t flying directly to previously. Travellers can save time and money by flying direct between Hobart and Newcastle rather than via Sydney, and that’s going to really appeal to a lot of holiday-makers.”
