Last week we reported that Virgin Australia secured a slot at Tokyo Haneda Airport, and this week Virgin has officially dished the details on its new daily route which starts next year.

From March 29, 2020, Virgin Australia will be flying directly between Brisbane and Tokyo Haneda Airport – just in time for the Olympics.

The Aussie carrier has also revealed that it will use an Airbus 330-200 to service the route.

Qantas has also been allocated a daily slot at Tokyo Haneda Airport after originally making a bid to secure both of the available slots at the Tokyo Airport.

Australia’s International Air Services Commission ruled that awarding one slot to each Aussie carrier ensured fair customer choice.

Qantas is yet to confirm which Australian city it will depart from on its new Haneda flights.

Haneda slots are very lucrative for airlines and more in demand than those at Tokyo Narita which is further away from the city.

Passengers flying into Haneda can pick up their baggage and be in the heart of Tokyo within 30 minutes.

Virgin’s new route is expected to open up access to Tokyo for an extra 100,000 Aussie travellers each year.

Virgin has since released a statement expressing how excited they are that travellers will now be able to make the most of their “competitive airfares and award-winning service” on flights to and from Japan.

“It’s about time someone brought competition to the monopoly market between Brisbane and Tokyo, and we couldn’t think of a better airline to do just that”.
