Melbourne is gearing up to welcome the new 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, as United launches its new direct service from Melbourne to Los Angeles.

The introduction of non-stop route between Melbourne and Los Angeles will be United’s first international service, operated by the Dreamliner 787-9.

“We are excited about using the newest version of the game-changing Dreamliner, the 787-9, to provide non-stop trans-Pacific service from Melbourne for the first time.”

Jim Compton, United’s vice chairman and chief revenue officer

The superior aircraft is set to change the face of travel, as travellers will be able to experience unprecedented comfort and amenities, including improved lighting, bigger windows, larger overhead bins, lower cabin altitude and enhanced ventilation systems. The aircraft’s use of lightweight composites, together with its modern engines and improved aerodynamic design, allow it to fly farther, faster and more efficiently than similar-sized conventional aircraft.

Jim added, “Our Melbourne customers will enjoy faster journeys to Los Angeles and beyond, as well as improved inflight comfort and amenities.”

United’s aircraft will have a total of 252 seats – 48 in United BusinessFirst and 204 in United Economy, including 63 Economy Plus seats – offering added legroom and increased personal space.

The BusinessFirst cabin will offer a superior business-class service with luxurious 180 degrees lie-flat beds as well as amenities including laptop power, USB ports and a multi-course meal with complimentary wines.

United’s Economy class offers complimentary food and inflight entertainment, the seats feature an adjustable headrest and a 22.8-cm personal seat-back monitor delivering a multi-channel Audio/Video on Demand inflight entertainment system. The Dreamliner 787-9 will also offer an Economy Plus product which offers up to 12.7cm of extra legroom.

The service will launch on October 28, 2014, initially as a six-time weekly service and schedule to increase daily on March 12, 2015.
