New debris found on Reunion Island

Investigators have ruled out a connection between two pieces of 'metallic debris' found on Reunion Island over the weekend and flight MH370.

Investigators have ruled out a connection between two pieces of ‘metallic debris’ found on Reunion Island over the weekend and flight MH370.

An AFP photographer saw police collecting one piece of debris over the weekend. Reports say the piece measured around 100-square centimetres.

Another piece was handed to police on Sunday and is said to be around 70 centimetres long.

Investigators say the pieces do not belong to any aircraft but urged locals to be on the look out for any further objects.

The discoveries came after Malaysia’s government confirmed aircraft a large piece of aircraft debris had been located on the island last week.

The plane part was sent to France to undergo testing and to verify whether it belonged to flight MH370, which went missing in March last year with 239 people onboard.

Malaysia’s Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai said over the weekend that the large piece of debris had been identified by French authorities, Boeing and a Malaysian team as being part of a Boeing 777 aircraft.

However, further testing is required to determine whether it’s the same 777 used for flight MH370.

The debris measured 2-by-2.5-metres and was found by people cleaning the beach.

Malaysia’s transport ministry said it could take until Wednesday morning to confirm if the piece came from flight MH370.

Among the ways to determine debris’ connection to the missing aircraft is to see if the serial number on the object is the same as flight MH370, the lab can then use other tools to learn more about the cause of the crash and whether it exploded mid-air of crashed into the ocean.
