Forget PBI: Palm Beach airport renamed for Trump, with a new airport code to match

The airport that serves Palm Beach and the surrounding South Florida has been renamed President Donald J. Trump International Airport, following a move to rename the long-standing Palm Beach International.

The airport that serves Palm Beach and the surrounding South Florida has been renamed President Donald J. Trump International Airport, following a move to rename the long-standing Palm Beach International.

According to the Associated Press, the South Florida gateway officially became President Donald J. Trump International Airport on Thursday, with the first signs of the rebrand already appearing across the terminal.

Old Palm Beach International Airport signage has been removed, while new branding is being installed in stages.

Airport officials warned passengers that the transition would take several weeks, meaning both the old and new branding will remain visible for a while.

“Because an entire airport transformation doesn’t happen overnight, you’ll notice a combination of both our classic look and our new brand elements coexisting while traveling through the terminal over the next several weeks,” officials said in a Facebook post.

The airport is located near President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach and is regularly used by members of the Trump family.

Trump Force One makes the first arrival

“Trump Force One”, the Boeing 757 owned by The Trump Organization, became the first aircraft to arrive at the newly renamed airport shortly after 5am.

Eric Trump was among the passengers on board.

“There is no person who has done more for Florida and our country, and no one more deserving of this incredible honor,” he posted on X.

“As a son, and someone who flies out of this airport nearly every day, I will forever be proud to see the initials ‘DJT’ on my boarding pass.”

PBI prepares for its next departure

While the airport’s new name has already taken effect, its three-letter airport code will not change immediately.

From 18 August, PBI will officially become DJT, meaning the president’s initials will begin appearing on boarding passes, baggage tags and flight displays.

The renaming follows another local change earlier this year, when a stretch of road connecting the airport with Mar-a-Lago was renamed Donald J. Trump Boulevard.

A rare move in aviation history

Major airports are often named after political leaders, but usually only once they have become historical figures. Naming one after a sitting head of state is unusual. Among the few examples is Baghdad’s Saddam International Airport, which bore Saddam Hussein’s name until the US-led invasion in 2003. Following the collapse of his regime, the airport was swiftly renamed Baghdad International Airport, with the former name disappearing within weeks.

Where South Florida sits for Aussie travellers

The United States remains one of the top long-haul destinations for Australian travellers, and Florida draws a steady share of that outbound traffic for its beaches, theme parks and cruise departures.

Palm Beach and its neighbouring resort towns feed a leisure market that includes golf, luxury stays and the cruise trade running out of nearby ports.
