Qantas brings in the big bucks for Aus tourism

Tourism Australia may have parted ways with the Flying Kangaroo back in 2012, but that hasn’t stopped the carrier that ‘still calls Australia home’ from contributing significantly to local tourism.

According to a Deloitte Access Economics report, Qantas’ helped generate the $21 billion made for Australia’s economy in 2014/15, including $9.5 billion in tourist expenditure.

How is this possible?

Well, around one in every $9 spent by a tourist in Australia comes from a Qantas passenger. Amazing!

Not only that, despite job cuts, Qantas still helped support one in nine jobs in the tourism industry.

Qantas Group Executive, Government and Internal Affairs, Andrew Parker, said figures are a result of strong marketing and Qantas’ focus on ‘championing brand Australia’.

“We’re not promoting a hub, we’re promoting a country.”

New South Wales benefited the most from Qantas’ efforts – housing the highest number of Qantas employees and injecting around $4.2 billion into the state’s economy.

Meanwhile, Victoria received around $2.67 billion from Qantas and Queensland welcomed $2.5 billion.
